How to Clean Up Your Facebook Account Before Deleting It (Checklist)
Deciding to delete (or abandon) your Facebook account is the easy part. The part people skip is the cleanup before they go — and it matters, because "delete account" doesn't behave the way most people assume, and anything you leave connected keeps working without you. Here's a practical checklist to walk through first.
1. Download your data
Before deleting anything, grab a copy: Settings → Your information → Download your information. Select at least Messages, Posts, and Photos/Videos. Facebook will build an archive you can download — photos you forgot, message history, the works. Once your account is deleted, this option is gone forever.
2. Delete your Messenger conversations
Here's the thing almost nobody knows: deleting your Facebook account does not delete your side of shared history immediately, and your messages to other people remain in their inboxes regardless. More importantly, if you're planning to deactivate rather than delete — which is what many people actually do — your entire message history stays fully intact.
If you want your conversation history actually cleared out, you have to delete the threads yourself, and Facebook only allows it one conversation at a time.
Messenger Cleaner automates this: open facebook.com/messages, click Remove Messages, and it works through your whole inbox in one run — the single most tedious step of this checklist, done in minutes.
3. Review and revoke connected apps
Settings → Apps and websites. Every app you ever logged into with Facebook is listed here, and many still have access to your profile data. Remove them all. If you used "Log in with Facebook" for services you want to keep (Spotify, etc.), switch those accounts to email login first, or you'll be locked out after deletion.
4. Untag and clean up photos
Photos you uploaded go when your account goes. Photos others uploaded of you don't — you can only remove the tag. Go through Profile → Photos → Photos of you and untag anything you don't want floating around attached to your name.
5. Transfer anything you own
- Pages you admin — add another admin or the Page dies with you.
- Groups you created — promote another admin.
- Events, Marketplace listings — close them out.
6. Update your login elsewhere
Search your password manager for "Facebook" — anywhere you used Facebook login or your Facebook-linked email needs a new sign-in method before the account disappears.
7. Now delete (not just deactivate)
Settings → Your information → Deactivation and deletion → Delete account. Two traps to know:
- Facebook gives you a 30-day grace period — logging in during it (including via a linked app!) can cancel the deletion.
- Deactivation is not deletion. A deactivated account keeps everything, including all your messages, indefinitely.
The short version
Download your data, wipe your messages, revoke apps, untag photos, hand off pages, fix your logins — then delete. Do it in that order and you leave nothing behind except what other people already had.
