How to Download Instagram Reels in HD Without a Watermark (2026)

July 11, 2026 · Instagram

Instagram lets you watch Reels endlessly but gives you no button to save one. The workarounds people reach for — screen recording, or pasting a link into a random "reel downloader" website — either wreck the quality or stamp a watermark across the video (and often ask you to log in, which you should never do). Here's how to get a clean, full-quality MP4 instead.

Why screen recording isn't good enough

A screen recording re-encodes the video through your display: you lose sharpness, you capture at your screen's frame rate rather than the original, and you pick up your phone's UI, notifications, and audio glitches. For a Reel you actually want to keep or repost, it looks obviously second-hand. Downloading the original file avoids all of that because you're saving the exact MP4 Instagram served.

Method 1: Chrome DevTools (free, manual)

You can pull the file by hand:

  1. Open the Reel in Chrome and press F12Network tab.
  2. Type .mp4 into the filter box.
  3. Let the Reel play for a second — an entry appears (served from cdninstagram.com or fbcdn.net).
  4. Click it → Open in new tab → right-click the video → Save video as…

This works and gives you the real file. The catch: Reels are often delivered in separate video and audio streams, or in chunked ranges, so you sometimes get a silent clip or a partial file — and you repeat the whole dance for every Reel.

Method 2: One click with an extension

Super Downloader adds a download button right on the Reel. Click it and you get the highest-quality MP4 Instagram serves — with audio, no watermark, and no re-encoding. It works on a single Reel or in bulk when you're saving a whole profile's worth, and it never asks you to log in anywhere because it runs inside your own browser session.

Quick answers

  • Will there be a watermark? No. You're saving the original file, so there's nothing added on top. (If a creator burned their own watermark into the video, that stays — it's part of the footage.)
  • Can I download someone else's Reel? Only ones you can already view. Save for personal use, and ask before reposting someone's work.
  • Does the creator get notified? No. Instagram doesn't notify anyone about downloads or screen recordings of Reels.
  • HD quality? Yes — both methods above grab the full-resolution source, not a compressed preview.
