How to Audit Your Instagram Followers (Find Ghosts, Fakes & Non-Followers)
If your follower count looks healthy but your reach feels dead, it's worth doing a follower audit โ a structured look at who actually follows you, who never engages, and who you're following into the void. You don't need an analytics subscription for this. You need your lists in a spreadsheet.
What a follower audit answers
- How many people I follow don't follow me back
- Who follows me that I don't follow back (my fans)
- How many of my followers are private, verified, or obviously inactive/fake
- Whether my following count is bloated with accounts I forgot about
Step 1: get your lists out of Instagram
You can't audit what you can't see all at once, and Instagram won't let you export. So the first step is pulling your followers and following into a spreadsheet.
IG Follower Extractor gives you both lists as CSV or Excel, one click each, with columns for username, full name, profile URL, user ID, and private/verified flags. It also has built-in Not following back and Your fans comparisons, so a lot of the audit is done for you before you even open a spreadsheet.
Step 2: work the spreadsheet
Once you have the files:
- Non-followers: use the extension's "Not following back" export, or compare the two lists yourself. Decide who's worth keeping.
- Fans: the "Your fans" list is people already invested in you โ good candidates to follow back or engage.
- Fakes & ghosts: sort by the private/verified flags and skim usernames. Strings of random letters and numbers, no full name, and default-looking handles are classic bot signatures.
- Bloat: filter your following list by anything you don't recognize and prune.
Step 3: act, then re-check
Unfollow or clean up based on what you found, then re-export in a month. Because you have dated spreadsheets, you can literally diff them to see who unfollowed you or who's new.
Quick answers
- How often should I audit? Monthly is plenty for most people; creators watching growth might do it weekly.
- Do I need to pay for a tool? No โ exporting and comparing your lists is free with IG Follower Extractor.
- Will accounts know I audited them? No. Reading and exporting your lists notifies no one.
- Can I automate the cleanup? The extractor exports and analyzes; actually unfollowing is something you do in Instagram itself.
